Family Treasure Hunting: Why It’s Never Too Early to Start Antique Picking

There’s nothing quite like seeing your little ones get involved in something you love. For us, antique picking and treasure hunting have been part of our family story for as long as I can remember. Whether it’s the thrill of finding vintage treasures or the joy of passing down a family tradition, it’s something special that we’ve shared with each of our kids.

Just look at Mitchell, totally absorbed in rummaging through a drawer. Maybe it’s just baby curiosity (as babies do!), but I like to think he’s already showing signs of being a natural picker—always searching, even if he doesn’t quite know what he’s looking for yet. It feels like the beginning of something special.

And then, of course, there’s Elliott, who’s now 16 and has taken his love for thrifting and reselling to a whole new level. I remember his first flea market pick like it was yesterday—his face lit up when he found a set of colorful vintage gardening tools. Now, his focus has shifted to sneakers and vintage t-shirts. With his eye for good finds, he’s even started reselling some of his favorite pieces online. It’s so rewarding to watch him turn his passion for thrifting into a budding reselling business.

Passing Down the Antique Picking Tradition

Of course, we can’t forget about the three older boys. While they appreciate the history behind our finds, antique picking isn’t really their thing. They enjoy the occasional treasure hunt and the stories behind the objects, but they’re more along for the family time than the thrill of the hunt. And that’s perfectly okay—everyone in the family has their own way of connecting with the tradition.

At the heart of it all is a shared love for history and discovery. Whether it’s Elliott reselling vintage clothing or Mitchell learning by rummaging through drawers, there’s something so rewarding about passing down the art of finding unique treasures. It’s more than just a hobby—it’s a tradition we’re building together, one piece at a time.

Why Antique Picking is Great for Families

Antique picking isn’t just about finding cool stuff. It’s a way to teach kids about history, craftsmanship, and the value of things that have stood the test of time. There’s something so special about uncovering a piece that tells a story, whether it’s a vintage tool, a retro t-shirt, or an antique piece of furniture. And when you hunt for treasures together as a family, you’re making memories that will last a lifetime.

Mitchell may not fully understand it now, but just like his brothers, he’s already part of this family tradition. Whether he grows up to be a full-fledged picker or just appreciates the charm of old things, I’m excited to see how his interest develops.
